Correspondence, personal papers, and Civil War papers and records, pertaining to the Chester district of South Carolina and the vicinity of Covington, Ga., before the Civil War; and soldiers' letters of the war period. Early letters relate to the collection of debts due John Cowan (husband) in the Chester area, and the poverty of relatives in that area. The wartime correspondence, from 5 sons in the Confederate forces, refers to marches in Kentucky and South Carolina, fighting around Vicksburg, details of camp life, supply shortages, and desertions. Includes bylaws of the Lewisville Rifle Co., pardons, amnesty oaths, and a postwar labor contract.
